Über zweieinhalb Jahre ist es her, als in dieser Zeitschrift das wahrscheinlich umfangreichste Interview stattfand, das Allan Holdsworth je gegeben hat. Zwölf Seiten Text können und müssen wir diesmal nicht bieten, dafür aber einige interessante, schöne und eher nachdenklich machende Neuigkeiten, von einem der wichtigsten Gitarristen der letzten drei Jahrzehnte. Wir trafen uns Mitte März in München, wo Holdsworth zusammen mit dem Bassisten Dave Carpenter und Drummer Gary Novak im Jazz Club des Hotels Bayerischer Hof auftrat. Und natürlich sollte es beim Interview am Nachmittag um ,None Too Soon‘, Allans neues Album, gehen. Hierzu einige vorab Informationen: Zusammen mit Gordon Beck (p), Gary Willis (b) und Kirk Covington (dr) hat sich Holdsworth ungewohnt erweise zur einen Hälfte an Standardkompositionen, zur anderen an Werken seines Pianisten versucht, die eine Art von Mittelachse im Album-Ablauf bilden. Was der Legato-Gitarrist nun aus Coltranes ,Countdown‘, Django Reinhardts ,Nuages‘, Bill Evans’ ,Very Early‘, Jacques Cousteaus ,How Deep Is The Ocean‘ und der frühen BritPop/Ethno-Nummer ,Norwegian Wood‘ macht, ist einfach fantastisch. Nach dem faszinierend konstruiert wirkenden Album ,Hard Hat Area‘, mit seiner eigenartigen, eher europäisch orientierten Atmosphäre, swingt und bopt sich Holdsworth hier so erfrischend und lebendig durch das genannte Themenmaterial, dass man ihn fast nicht wiedererkennt – wären da nicht sein typischer Ton und eine Phrasierung, bei der man einen langen Atem braucht. Dieser Mensch ist bekanntermaßen unglaublich, eine absolute Ausnahmeerscheinung in positivster Hinsicht was sein musikalisch/gitarristisches Potential angeht, in negativer was seine umgekehrt proportionale bis praktisch nicht bestehende Relevanz im Business betrifft. Und auch zu diesem Thema äußerte sich Allan während des Gesprächs. 

G&B: Trotz des für dich ungewöhnlichen Themenmaterials „Standards“ weiß man bei ,None Too Soon‘ nach wenigen Tönen, wer da Gitarre spielt. Deine Spielweise hat sich nicht verändert, dafür aber die Grundstimmung der Musik: Ich höre mehr Leben, Lockerheit, Offenheit und Humor. Was ist passiert? 

Allan: Danke, das hört sich gut an; aber was sich verändert hat – ich weiß es nicht. Es war nicht meine Idee, dieses Album aufzunehmen. Man vermutete, dass nicht sehr viele Leute meine Musik verstehen, und daher könnten sie über diese bekannten Fremdkompositionen leichter Zugang zu den anderen Platten finden. Aus diesem Grund habe ich es aufgenommen. Für mich macht es keinen Unterschied, ob ich ,Countdown‘ oder ,Nuages‘ spiele – eine Harmonieverbindung ist eine Harmonieverbindung, da gibt es im Grunde keine Unterschiede im spielerischen Ansatz. Also lernte ich diese Stücke. Ich kannte kaum Standards; ganz am Anfang habe ich mal einige gespielt, als ich noch jung war, aber die hatte ich lange vergessen. Ja, und ansonsten habe ich genau das gemacht, was ich sonst auch tue. Ich habe also nicht plötzlich mit einer dicken Jazz-Gitarre gespielt, denn dann hätte es sich wahrscheinlich sehr konventionell angehört. Ich habe einfach gespielt. Was mir an dieser Produktion gar nicht gefiel, war, dass Gordon (Beck) auf einem „Plastik-Piano“ spielen musste, weil wir keinen Flügel in meinem Studio haben. 

G&B: Was soll’s. Wahrscheinlich haben wir alle schon mehr schlecht aufgenommene Steinway-Grands gehört, als miese Digital Sounds. 

Allan: Klar... (überlegt) Eigentlich macht es mir mehr Spaß, wenn ich meine eigene Musik spiele. Diese Musik gibt mir nicht besonders viel Freude, keine richtige Befriedigung. Es war natürlich schön, als wir das Album fertig hatten und es uns anhören konnten; denn es sind wirklich keine Sachen drauf, die ich absolut nicht mag. Aber diese Art von Musik möchte ich nicht unbedingt live spielen. Außerdem können wir in der Album-Besetzung auch kaum auf Tour gehen, da Gary (Willis) und Kirk (Covington) in Scott Hendersons Band spielen und wir relativ oft zur gleichen Zeit unterwegs wären. Daher habe ich dann eine neue Band zusammengestellt. Ich wollte schon etwas in diese neue Richtung gehen, aber dabei meine eigenen Kompositionen spielen. Jetzt habe ich einen Weg gefunden, mit viel Intensität zu spielen, aber nicht laut. Wir sind eine sehr softe Band. 

G&B: Ich denke, dass du mit ,None Too Soon‘ nicht nur neue Fans finden wirst; diese Platte wird auch einige alte Anhänger deiner Musik wachrütteln. 

Allan: Ja, das kann sein! Ich wollte einfach was ausprobieren. Und vielleicht gibt es ja ein zweites Album dieser Art, allerdings nicht in nächster Zeit. Zuerst möchte ich mich wieder mit meiner eigenen Musik befassen... (überlegt) Ich hatte so viel Ärger mit diesem Album: Es kam bereits vor über zwei Jahren in Japan raus, und kurz danach sollte es auch weltweit erscheinen. Aber dann hat dieser Typ in Amerika entschieden, dass es weder in den USA noch in Europa erscheinen sollte – also nur in Japan! Das ganze letzte Jahr, das ganze letzte Jahr habe ich dafür gekämpft, die Rechte zurückzubekommen. Die habe ich anschließend Restless-Records neu vergeben, weil sie auch die Rechte an meinen anderen Alben haben; sie haben die Platte dann veröffentlicht. Als Label haben sie „AH Records“ angegeben, aber das ist wirklich nur ein Logo, denn ich habe kein eigenes Label. Es ging darum, für meine Musik eine Nische in ihrem Repertoire zu schaffen. Natürlich würde ich auch gerne selbst produzieren und verwerten, aber dafür habe ich leider nicht das Geld; ich habe nicht genug Geld, um irgendwelche Leute und ein großes Studio zu bezahlen. Daher haben wir eben alles bei mir zu Hause gemacht. Das war auch eine sehr gemütliche, einfache Sache... Wir haben vielleicht vier Tage für die Aufnahmen gebraucht... 

G&B: Und jetzt spielst du live in Trio-Besetzung. Wirst du mit der neuen Band auch demnächst ins Studio gehen? 

Allan: Ja, das will ich auf jeden Fall tun, aber nicht vor Ende des Jahres, denke ich. Jetzt spielen wir erst mal in Japan, dann noch mal in Europa und anschließend auch in den USA. Danach könnte dann etwas passieren. Vielleicht klappt es ja irgendwann noch einmal, dass ich jedes Jahr ein Album rausbringe. Eigentlich hätte ich ja schon lange wieder was Neues gemacht, aber es gab einfach keinen Grund dafür, weil ich ,None Too Soon‘ ja noch nicht mal so veröffentlichen konnte wie ich wollte. Das war so verrückt! 

G&B: Was bei ,None Too Soon‘ noch auffällt, ist, dass du wieder die SynthAxe spielst. 

Allan: Ja, das stimmt... 

G&B: Vor drei Jahren warst du aber ziemlich sicher, dass du nie wieder... 

Allan: (nickt) Ich hatte sie sogar verkauft. Aber dann rief mich irgendwann ein Freund an, und er wollte eine SynthAxe verkaufen. Er ließ sie dann eine Zeitlang bei mir zu Hause, und schließlich tauschte ich sie gegen zwei meiner Gitarren ein. Die meisten Tracks dieses Albums habe ich allerdings auf einer Steinberger-Gitarre eingespielt. Die Carvin, die ich heute spiele, war zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahmen noch gar nicht gebaut; sonst hätte ich sie mit Sicherheit eingesetzt. 

G&B: In den Liner Notes dankst du Alex & Sasha von Gorky Park; ist das die russische Rock-Band? 

Allan: Ja, sie sind es. Die Beiden haben mir eine Menge Equipment geliehen. 

G&B: Und du dankst den Stone Temple Pilots... 

Allan: Oh ja, die Stone Temple Pilots. Vor knapp zwei Jahren wurde meine SynthAxe gestohlen, das war bei einem Gig in einem Club in L.A. Dean DeLeo, der Gitarrist der Pilots, ist ein großer Fan, und er hörte in einem Musikladen davon. Sie haben dann irgendwo eine gebrauchte SynthAxe aufgetrieben, sie haben tatsächlich eine aufgetrieben. Und dann kamen sie bei mir vorbei, und schenkten sie mir. Unglaublich! Ist das nicht wunderbar? Sie sind dafür verantwortlich, dass ich weiter mit einem solchen Instrument spielen kann – und dafür bin ich ihnen sehr dankbar... (überlegt) 

G&B: Was deine Live-Aktivitäten in Europa angeht, sah es in den letzten Jahren nicht so besonders gut aus... 

Allan: Weißt du, das Problem ist folgendes: Es sieht so aus, als hätten wir ein Publikum, auch in Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz; und die Leute wollen uns auch hier gerne sehen. Die Veranstalter, die zwischen mir und dem Publikum stehen, sehen das nicht so, und sie wollen uns anscheinend nicht nach Europa bringen. Das ist so ähnlich, wie bei der Geschichte mit meinem Album, das nicht rauskommen sollte: Es gibt anscheinend immer Leute, die auch mal etwas verhindern möchten... 

G&B: Vor zwei Jahren war aber schon mal eine Deutschland-Tour für dich gebucht, die dann letztendlich doch nicht stattfand. 

Allan: Mein Manager hat das gecancelt. Er hat uns gesagt, wir würden dabei kein Geld verdienen... Er sagt manchmal: „Wenn ihr da spielt, verliert ihr Geld.“ Und dann lässt er uns eben nicht gehen. Inzwischen kommen wir finanziell besser zurecht, weil wir nur noch zu dritt spielen, und auch keinen eigenen Sound-Mann dabeihaben. Das funktioniert schon besser... 

G&B: Was machst du neben deinem Job? Fährst du noch viel Fahrrad? 

Allan: Ja, ich fahre noch, aber da muss ich erst wieder Kondition bekommen. Mein anderes Hobby kennst du ja: Im vergangenen Jahr haben wir eine neue Bierzapfanlage entwickelt, und wir waren damit auch schon in England, um sie einigen großen Brauereien vorzustellen. Und die haben Interesse daran! (Herr Holdsworth strahlt) Mit dieser Anlage kann man aus brauchbarem amerikanischem Bier sogar etwas ähnliches, wie ein qualitativ hochwertiges nordenglisches Bier, mit leckerem, cremigem Schaum zaubern. Daran habe ich im letzten Jahr gearbeitet, und daher also nichts verdient – bisher. (ernst) Und wenn Dave Carpenter, der Bassist mit dem ich jetzt spiele, nicht gewesen wäre, dann würde ich heute überhaupt nicht hier sitzen. Nach diesem ganzen Ärger mit der Platte, hatte ich die Lust an allem verloren. An allem und auch an der Musik. Ich wollte nichts mehr damit zu tun haben. Dann traf ich Dave, und er hat mich aus meinem Verlies gezwungen. Sonst hätte ich wohl nicht mehr weitergemacht... 

Technik 

Als erstes interessiert sich Allan für das Danelectro-Effektgerät, das er auf dem Titel der April-Ausgabe von Gitarre & Bass entdeckt. „Vielleicht sollte ich mir so etwas zulegen“, überlegt er. „Manchmal würde ich am liebsten nur mit ein paar Bodeneffekten spielen.“ Auf die Frage, ob er in letzter Zeit neues Equipment ausprobiert habe, antwortete Holdsworth mit einem klaren „No“. Beim Soundcheck war dann aber doch die ein oder andere Kleinigkeit zu entdecken, die so alt nicht sein konnte. Seine Hauptgitarre ist seit einiger Zeit eine Carvin H1T mit einem einzelnen Humbucker-Pickup (dem von Holdsworth designten H22) in Stegposition und einem „Wilkinson Tremolo“-Vibrato-System. Das Besondere an diesem Instrument ist der Eschen-Body in „semihollow“-Bauweise, das Gerät fällt demnach relativ leicht aus. Der Hals der Gitarre ist allerdings eher kräftig, auf dem Ebony-Griffbrett sitzen 24 „extra large“-Jumbo-Bundstäbchen. Holdsworth weiter: „Ich habe mit zwei verschiedenen Amps aufgenommen: einem Dual Rectifier von Mesa und einem Sovtek Mig-50, der hat nur rund 300 Dollar gekostet. Der Sovtek ist ganz großartig für die Sounds mit nicht zu viel Distortion, z. B. bei ,Nuages‘. Ich habe ihn für alle softeren Nummern eingesetzt, bei den härteren Stücken ist der Rectifier zu hören. Und dazu habe ich eine ganze Menge verschiedener Speaker und Cabinets ausprobiert, mit diesen Dingen habe ich wirklich experimentiert.“ Auf und in Allans Live-Rack befinden sich eine Menge verschiedenster Geräte, von denen beim Münchner Gig allerdings einige ausgefallen waren. Da war der Gepäckservice einer Airline wohl etwas grob bei der Arbeit. Überwiegend verwendet Holdsworth bekannte Standardteile (mehrere Rocktron Intellifex, MXR Noise Gate/Line Driver/Limiter, TC Electronics Blue Star/Line Driver/Parametric EQ), aber auch Selbstgebautes (z. B. ein „Power Amp to Line Level Interface“, das den Output des Rectifier-Tops auf Line Level runterfährt und dann, nach eventueller Effektbearbeitung, auf eine Carvin-F-300- Stereo-Endstufe in Verbindung mit zwei 2 × 12"-Boxen von Carvin gibt). Was er genau wozu einsetzt, das weiß nur der Meister selbst, und während des Gigs hatte ich leider keine Gelegenheit, zu seinen Füßen zu hocken, und die Schaltaktivitäten zu jedem Song zu dokumentieren. Entscheidend ist sowieso, was Holdsworth mit seinen Händen macht – denn einzig und allein hier liegt das Geheimnis seiner Musik, mal abgesehen von dem, was in seinem großen Kopf vorgeht. Aber was liegt da auf dem Boden, neben einem Kanalumschalter und drei Volumen-Pedalen? Ein Roland VG 8, das geniale Gerät, das niemand haben wollte, obwohl es die einzige revolutionäre Entwicklung seit Jahren im Gitarren-Business ist – einmal abgesehen von den ganz neuen Digital-Amps. Da hat der Meister sich wohl doch mal mit der ein oder anderen Innovation befasst. Die Sounds des VG 8 spielte Holdsworth am Interview-Abend über zwei neue Roland-Combos, und sie werden eher für die speziellen Farben eingesetzt, z. B. wenn etwas Acoustic-Edge über einem Chorus-Sound gefragt ist, oder wenn das ein oder andere Thema (das er sonst eventuell mit der SynthAxe spielen würde) klanglich etwas ausgefallener gefahren werden soll. Seine cremigen Lead Sounds erzeugt der Gitarrist weiterhin überwiegend mit dem Rectifier-Röhren-Top (s. o.). Fazit: Allan Holdsworth ist immer noch kein Technokrat, und demnach machen bei diesem stilistisch einzigartigen Ausnahmemusiker 19"-Listen auch keinen Sinn. Platten kaufen, anhören, Interview in G&B 11/94 lesen, nächstes AH-Konzert besuchen und anschließend beim Rausgehen dezent Mund, Augen und Ohren wieder auf das normale Maß zurückfahren. Erst dann weißt du mehr. It's been over two and a half years since what was probably the most extensive interview with Allan Holdsworth took place in this magazine. We don't need to offer twelve pages of text this time, but we do have some interesting, beautiful, and rather thought-provoking news from one of the most important guitarists of the last three decades. We met in mid-March in Munich, where Holdsworth was performing at the Jazz Club of the Bayerischer Hof hotel with bassist Dave Carpenter and drummer Gary Novak. And, of course, the interview in the afternoon was about "None Too Soon," Allan's new album. Here are some preliminary details: Together with Gordon Beck (piano), Gary Willis (bass), and Kirk Covington (drums), Holdsworth has, unusually, attempted to tackle half of the album with standard compositions and the other half with works by his pianist, creating a kind of middle axis in the album's flow. What the legato guitarist does with Coltrane's "Countdown," Django Reinhardt's "Nuages," Bill Evans' "Very Early," Jacques Cousteau's "How Deep Is The Ocean," and the early BritPop/Ethno number "Norwegian Wood" is simply fantastic. After the fascinatingly constructed album "Hard Hat Area," with its peculiar, more European-oriented atmosphere, Holdsworth swings and bops through the mentioned material so refreshingly and lively that you almost don't recognize him—except for his typical tone and phrasing that require a long breath. This person is famously incredible, an absolute exception in the most positive sense regarding his musical/guitaristic potential and in the negative sense regarding his practically nonexistent relevance in the business. Allan also commented on this topic during the conversation.

G&B: Despite the unusual theme of "standards," one can tell after a few notes that it's you playing the guitar on "None Too Soon." Your playing style hasn't changed, but the mood of the music has: I hear more life, looseness, openness, and humor. What happened?

Allan: Thank you, that sounds good, but what has changed - I don't know. It wasn't my idea to record this album. It was suspected that not many people understand my music, and therefore, they might find it easier to access my other records through these familiar compositions by others. That's why I recorded it. For me, it makes no difference whether I play "Countdown" or "Nuages" - a harmony connection is a harmony connection; there are basically no differences in the playing approach. So, I learned these pieces. I hardly knew any standards; I played some at the very beginning when I was young, but I had long forgotten them. Yes, and otherwise, I did exactly what I always do. So, I didn't suddenly play with a big jazz guitar, because then it would probably have sounded very conventional. I just played. What I didn't like about this production was that Gordon (Beck) had to play on a "plastic piano" because we didn't have a grand piano in my studio.

G&B: Oh well. We've probably all heard more poorly recorded Steinway grands than lousy digital sounds.

Allan: Of course... (pauses) Actually, I enjoy playing my own music more. This music doesn't give me much joy, no real satisfaction. It was nice, of course, when we finished the album and could listen to it because there really aren't any things on it that I absolutely dislike. But I don't necessarily want to play this kind of music live. Furthermore, we can hardly go on tour with the album lineup because Gary (Willis) and Kirk (Covington) play in Scott Henderson's band, and we would often be on the road at the same time. So, I put together a new band. I wanted to go in this new direction but play my own compositions. Now, I've found a way to play with a lot of intensity but not loudly. We are a very soft band.

G&B: I think that with "None Too Soon," you will not only find new fans; this record will also awaken some old followers of your music.

Allan: Yes, that could be! I just wanted to try something. And maybe there will be a second album of this kind, but not in the near future. First, I want to focus on my own music again... (pauses) I had so much trouble with this album: It was released in Japan over two years ago, and shortly afterward, it was supposed to be released worldwide. But then this guy in America decided that it shouldn't be released in the USA or Europe - only in Japan! The whole last year, the whole last year, I fought to get the rights back. I then re-licensed it to Restless Records because they also have the rights to my other albums; they released the record. They listed it as "AH Records," but that's really just a logo because I don't have my own label. It was about creating a niche for my music in their repertoire. Of course, I would also like to produce and market it myself, but unfortunately, I don't have the money; I don't have enough money to pay people and a big studio. So, we did everything at my home. It was a very cozy, simple thing... We might have taken about four days for the recordings...

G&B: And now you're playing live in a trio lineup. Will you go into the studio with the new band soon?

Allan: Yes, I definitely want to do that, but probably not before the end of the year. Right now, we're playing in Japan, then again in Europe, and after that, in the USA. After that, something might happen. Maybe it will work out someday that I release an album every year again. Actually, I should have done something new a long time ago, but there simply wasn't a reason for it because I couldn't release "None Too Soon" the way I wanted to. It was so crazy!

G&B: What's also noticeable about "None Too Soon" is that you're playing the SynthAxe again.

Allan: Yes, that's true...

G&B: Three years ago, though, you were pretty sure that you would never play it again...

Allan: (nods) I had actually sold it. But then, at some point, a friend called me, and he wanted to sell a SynthAxe. He left it at my home for a while, and eventually, I traded it for two of my guitars. However, most of the tracks on this album were recorded on a Steinberger guitar. The Carvin guitar that I'm playing today wasn't even built at the time of the recordings; otherwise, I would have definitely used it.

G&B: In the liner notes, you thank Alex & Sasha from Gorky Park; is that the Russian rock band?

Allan: Yes, that's them. They lent me a lot of equipment.

G&B: And you thank the Stone Temple Pilots...

Allan: Oh yes, the Stone Temple Pilots. About two years ago, my SynthAxe was stolen; it happened during a gig at a club in L.A. Dean DeLeo, the guitarist of the Pilots, is a big fan, and he heard about it at a music store. They managed to find a used SynthAxe somewhere; they actually found one. Then they came to my place and gave it to me. Unbelievable! Isn't that wonderful? They are responsible for me being able to continue playing with such an instrument - and I'm very grateful to them... (pauses)

G&B: As for your live activities in Europe, it hasn't looked particularly good in recent years...

Allan: You know, the problem is this: It seems like we have an audience, even in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and people here would like to see us. However, the promoters who stand between me and the audience don't see it that way, and they apparently don't want to bring us to Europe. It's somewhat similar to the story with my album that wasn't supposed to be released: There always seem to be people who want to prevent something...

G&B: But two years ago, there was a Germany tour booked for you that ultimately didn't happen.

Allan: My manager canceled that. He told us we wouldn't make money from it... He sometimes says, "If you play there, you'll lose money." And then he doesn't let us go. Meanwhile, we're doing better financially because we're only playing as a trio now and don't have our own sound engineer. That works better...

G&B: What do you do besides your job? Do you still ride your bike a lot?

Allan: Yes, I still ride, but I need to build up my conditioning again. You know about my other hobby: Last year, we developed a new beer tap system, and we even went to England to present it to some major breweries. And they're interested! (Mr. Holdsworth beams) With this system, you can turn decent American beer into something resembling high-quality North English beer with delicious, creamy foam. I worked on that last year, and so far, I haven't made any money from it. (seriously) And if it weren't for Dave Carpenter, the bassist I'm playing with now, I wouldn't be sitting here today at all. After all the trouble with the record, I lost interest in everything. Everything, including music. I didn't want anything to do with it anymore. Then I met Dave, and he dragged me out of my dungeon. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have continued...

Title: Technology

First of all, Allan is interested in the Danelectro effects unit that he discovered on the cover of the April issue of Gitarre & Bass. "Maybe I should get something like that," he considers. "Sometimes I'd like to play with just a few floor effects." When asked if he has tried new equipment recently, Holdsworth responded with a clear "No." However, during the soundcheck, a few things were discovered that couldn't be that old.

His main guitar has been a Carvin H1T for some time, equipped with a single Humbucker pickup (the Holdsworth-designed H22) in the bridge position and a "Wilkinson Tremolo" vibrato system. The special feature of this instrument is the semi-hollow ash body, making the guitar relatively lightweight. The neck of the guitar is on the hefty side, and it features a 24 "extra large" jumbo frets on an Ebony fretboard.

Holdsworth further explains, "I recorded with two different amps: a Mesa Dual Rectifier and a Sovtek Mig-50, which only cost around 300 dollars. The Sovtek is great for sounds with not too much distortion, like 'Nuages.' I used it for all the softer songs, while the Rectifier was used for the harder pieces. I also experimented with various speakers and cabinets; I really tried out different things."

In Allan's live rack, there are various devices, some of which were missing during the Munich gig, likely due to mishandling by an airline's baggage service. He primarily uses familiar standard components like Rocktron Intellifex, MXR Noise Gate/Line Driver/Limiter, TC Electronics Blue Star/Line Driver/Parametric EQ, but also custom-built gear like a "Power Amp to Line Level Interface" that reduces the output of the Rectifier amp to line level and then, after possible effects processing, connects to a Carvin F-300 stereo power amp paired with two 2x12" Carvin speaker cabinets.

The specifics of how he uses each piece of equipment are known only to the master himself. During the gig, there wasn't an opportunity to document the switching activities for each song. Ultimately, what matters most is what Holdsworth does with his hands, as the secret of his music lies solely there, aside from what goes on in his great mind.

But what's on the floor next to a channel switcher and three volume pedals? A Roland VG 8, the ingenious device that nobody wanted, even though it's the only revolutionary development in the guitar business for years, apart from the brand new digital amps. It seems the master has indeed explored a few innovations. Holdsworth used the VG 8's sounds during the interview night through two new Roland combos, primarily for special colors. For instance, when he needed some acoustic edge over a chorus sound or when he wanted to create a more unique sonic character for certain themes (which he might otherwise play with the SynthAxe).

He continues to produce his creamy lead sounds primarily using the Rectifier tube amp (as mentioned above). In conclusion, Allan Holdsworth is still not a technocrat, and therefore, 19-inch rack lists make no sense for this stylistically unique exceptional musician. To know more, buy his albums, listen to them, read the interview in G&B's November 1994 issue, attend his next concert, and then, on your way out, gently readjust your mouth, eyes, and ears to their normal standards. Only then will you truly understand more.

There are rumors about Allan's involvement in further productions that may be released in the future.

Allegedly, at the end of the previous year, Allan collaborated with some colleagues from the 1985 production "Soma." They are said to have created a modern rock album titled "Neverwasneverwillbe - No Title Available," which might be released later this year. Early statements from those involved sound promising: "infectious, funky, pocket-groove metal and acid new rage, and a major new showcase for Allan’s rock sensibilities," or "kinda Mahavishnu-meets-Alice-In-Chains." Stay tuned.

Allan Holdsworth might also be heard again soon as a studio guest with his rocker friends from Gorky Park.
Steve Hunt, the keyboardist from Holdsworth's album "Hard Hat Area," has just completed his first solo CD. Allan plays guitar and SynthAxe on two tracks, with additional guests including Icelandic bassist Skuli Sverrisson and drummer Chad Wackerman.
