Allan Holdsworth (Sound Waves 2012)
Chad has a long history of playing drums with your group. I realize that you have worked with other drummers as well, but your new lineup features Virgil Donati on drums instead of Chad. How did that come about?
I wanted to do something a bit different for my new record, and I haven't done a new studio record in over ten years. The way the music was going, it was just a bit different. That's all. So I asked Virgil to play on the record, and he plays amazingly on it. So it seemed like a natural thing to do. Even though the album is not quite finished yet, it's a good way along, and I just decided to do it with Virgil and Jimmy Haslip.
The Allan Holdsworth Interview! (Jazz Houston 2006)
MM: Tell me about the Jimmy Haslip, Alan Pasqua, Chad Wackerman “Lifetime Tribute” dates in Europe coming up soon.
AH: It's actually some old stuff and new stuff. We doing it very similar to the way we did it in “Lifetime”. We're coming in with music that's not quite finished pieces and experimenting with it as we go. I haven't done it that way in a long time and it's great. It's challenging getting my butt kicked, it's great.
MM: Are there any chances of recordings with this band?
A: Well, not in Europe, but there's a good chance that if we all come out of it with a smile on our face then we probably will back in the states…hopefully, it would be nice to think that we could do something. (note: Jimmy Haslip has also expressed great interest in doing a recording with this band and has told me that Allan is just ridiculous in rehearsals playing incredible solos then spends the twenty minutes after rehearsals apologizing for how bad he played)
Jimmy On Allan
Q: You also played with Allan Holdsworth.
JH: “That was an incredible experience. Being able to tour and perform with Allan was unmistakably one of the highlights of my career, and being able to get inside his head a little bit and to understand what he was about, was an eye-opening experience.
JH “He was a genius, and it’s been said many times that he actually changed his instrument. You can count those people on one hand. I’ll always revere that experience and never take it for granted. And playing with a gentleman like Gary Husband was incredible too, because he’s not only a great drummer, he’s also an amazing piano player, which is unique. There’s really not too many of those people on the planet.“
